The incarnation is obviously important. I cannot get over the similarities of these two passages and am trying to dwell on the importance of the reflection of humility they raise. Two authors one message in two ways- Jesus condescended to become man, lived the life we should have lived, died the death we should have died and ascended into the heavens to sit at the right hand of the Father on high in power.
Parallels between Philippians 2 and John 13 that are intriguing:
John 13:3-4 - 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
Phil 2:7 - 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men
John 13:5 - 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him
Phil 2:7 - but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men
John 13:12 - 12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place...
Phil 2:9 - 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
John 13:13 - 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.
Phil 2:11 - 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
